I remember mentioning on the list a few weeks ago that there needs to be daycare available EVERYWHERE that women go. I believe childcare jobs should be performed by trained, qualified personnel. Women are no longer at home all day long being SOLELY professional wives and mothers the way they were in the 19th century….therefore, there will need to be safe, affordable daycare EVERYWHERE that women need to go. I say this because the idea of having day care centers attached to libraries, or to the schools with which they are affiliated, is appealing, but there are still questions of staffing, space, and cost which don’t go away just because we say it’s the responsibility of ”the management of the places where women go.”
I am preparing myself for the shock of childcare jobs costs, but haven’t a specific number yet. Since it is very early for me to be calling places, I was hoping for some input from others in the group who are closer to using daycare, or who have other children in daycare. I’m hearing $175 a week in Mass for commercial day care centers; $150 for at home moms who can take in up to 6 children in their homes (Mass laws allow for 6 in a home, up to 2 who are children of the provider). Are these numbers in the ballpark? If so, I’m thinking au pair, which I HAVE researched, and that is between $190-205 a week. I think it will be worth the extra money (if it is indeed extra per week – obviously the extra household costs are not included in this figure).
All people who use daycare are ”dumping” their kids… I have no problem with it for older kids, and realize that in some places it’s safe for even the little ones. I’m just frustrated that I can’t find any useful information from anyone I’ve met around here, and that anyone who isn’t berating me for not being a SAHM is ridiculing me for thinking that it matters who’s watching my baby. I actually had two mothers in the area tell me the other day that I “think too much”, “daycare is all the same, they rip you off for letting your kid play on their floor”, and “it really isn’t worth asking them about anything but price, you’ll see that when you aren’t such an overexcited new mom.” I’m starting to feel as if I’m the only person in the world who takes a middle ground. Anyhow, I was commenting on some of the people I’ve met here, not on childcare jobs-users worldwide.
I’m in somewhat the dilemma. My son is 2 1/2yo, and I’ve been fortunate enough to be able to keep him home with me since he was seven months old. I recently tried putting him in daycare part-time, for the social experience, but also to give me a chance to do some of my work-at-home during the day. However, he has had one illness after another since he started, and after going through rosella followed directly by pneumonia, I decided that this was not a great idea right now.
Didn’t anyone ever tell you not to pull things out of context? So what IS the point of going to college for years to in order to hold the lowest level care home and daycare jobs? If all someone is going to be doing is lifting dead weight and shoveling shit, they can get those childcare jobs right off the street. My very highly accomplished aunt was an RN, and it was a field that I had considered as a kid. This country would grind to a halt without RN’s. Or rather, there would be a four hand scramble to get substitutes in pronto, and open new schools to train new ones.
In general, they pay very poorly, have Teacher-child ratios at the max, and have high turnover (and probably less-trained staff.) It is rare for a chain center to have the NAEYC credentials or to have much representation at conferences. Look for things such as sending teachers home and combining classes if numbers are low (a very poor policy, for the children’s sake, and contributes greatly to staff turnover), Staff members working more than 8 hours (same problems-occasional overtime is fine, but not habitually), and teaching staff doing jobs which shouldn’t be in the job description (the teaching staff shouldn’t be pulled away from the kids to clean bathrooms, for example.
If preschool is a necessity in getting a child ready for kindergarten? As someone who sent her kids to preschool really early, and believes firmly that a good preschool is a Good Thing…no, they are *not* necessary. If you are teaching her stuff already, and you have play arrangements for her to meet other kids frequently (preferably the same kids so that friendships develop), she’ll be as well off as her preschooler peers. About the only thing she would have no experience of is a class-room setting and taking directions from non-Mom; but then if you enroll her in just about any class or group activity, you can. There are also many childcare jobs available.
