Safety screen: Worker Tests to Protect Children

Childcare workers, school bus drivers, teachers and ministers of religion will be screened for child sex convictions under new laws to come into effect next month. All people working with children including scout leaders, private tutors and sports coaches who have direct access to children will have to make a legal declaration that they have no child-related convictions.

All preferred applicants for jobs that involve working with children will be screened for child abuse, child pornography, sexual activity or indecent acts. All other paid employees and volunteers in childcare jobs including amusement arcade workers, nurses and doctors in children’s wards and hospitals, scout and guide leaders, ministers of religion and sporting coaches will be screened.

In an Australian first, all new preferred applicants for jobs with children will also be checked for Apprehended Violence Orders involving children and completed disciplinary matters relating to children. The new laws, among the toughest in the world, will apply to anyone in unsupervised contact with children in both the public and private sectors and volunteer organizations.

Employers will also be able to do “spot checks” on employees to ensure children in their care are not at risk. If someone is declared a “Prohibited Person”, their name is registered with the Commission for Children and Young People and they will be banned from any child-related employment

Child Care Available — NJ/NY

Our Youth Group has an annual slave day at the church.  Actually we’ve changed the name to rent-a-kid.  We have members of the congregation sign-up with chores they need done, or babysitting jobs, or errands to run, whatever. Then the members of the youth group are assigned childcare jobs to do one Saturday (or whatever day hire-er needs) and are paid in a donation. The money gets split evenly between all who work because some people may pay like $75 for a car wash just because it’s for a youth group kid while another person may pay just $20 to have all their windows washed.

Everyone that works gets the same amount of money.  Another thing about same is a Promise Auction.  Kids offer themselves for different tasks (same sort of stuff) and members of the congregation can bid on their services. You can do the spaghetti dinner thing like someone said, but save some money by cooking yourself.  Provide entertainment for this.  I’m sure you’ve probably got some musicians, singers, comedians, actors, mimes, or magicians in your group somewhere.  You just have to pull it out of them.

Babysitting – When to Let Them?

My daughter is also twelve and has demonstrated the ability to care for children in babysitting situation. One of the ways we’re giving her experience sitting w/o having her bear the whole responsibility is by working for the church. There are groups that have got together at the church and hire small groups of teens to babysit. By being part of that she gets a chance to be in charge and if anything came up that was beyond her ability she could get the parents. If a family that we knew & trusted with 2 or 3 children hired her for childcare jobs, we would allow her, but for the first couple of times I would make sure I was going to be home so that if she needed assistance she could call for it.

We have a favorite babysitter who started sitting for us when she was just shy of 15.  Her mother has trained her to babysit.  She took her to first aid and cpr classes. She talked to her at great length about the things your child probably knows … age-appropriate toys, diapering, safety issues, etc.  She taught her to clean up, put food away properly, and wash the dishes. She went along on her first several jobs to observe from a distance and watch how well she was able to manage the children. I would advise that you go over these types of things with your child.  I have been quite surprised by the holes in my children’s knowledge and by the holes in the knowledge of some babysitters I have hired.

The Children’s Defense Fund

America’s workers are paying continuously rising costs for goods and services, yet those who earn very low wages have gone seven years with no action by Congress to raise the minimum wage and help them meet those costs.  For too many working families a full-time job does not provide enough money to support a family.  Raising the minimum wage would increase families’ ability to pay for child care, housing, food and medicine.

However, the Republicans will likely offer an alternative amendment with a lesser increase in the minimum wage of around $6.25 tied to provisions that will undermine worker protections.  An increase to $6.25 would help 4.1 million workers, 3.3 million fewer than the Democratic proposal.

A fair increase in the minimum wage is long overdue.  It’s been seven years since the nation’s lowest paid workers have had a raise. Congress should act as quickly as possible to pass a minimum wage increase that reflects the losses suffered as the result of seven years of inaction.

Opponents routinely argue that minimum wage increases cause job losses. The empirical minimum wage research solidly rejects this hypothesis and proves that childcare jobs did not fall when Congress enacted previous minimum wage increases in the 1990s.

Welfare System

What is welfare for?  Welfare is not intended to take care of people who have the wherewithal to provide for themselves.  t is not designed to maintain your current style of living. Welfare is not designed to keep you alive. Welfare is designed to keep you from dying while trying to do better for yourself period.

With such generous benefits (not!) is it any wonder people cheat? How can you expect a mother to support her child (ren) when she works at a low paying service job with no medical benefits and has to pay for childcare jobs. Can we make changes in the welfare system? You bet we can! The first thing we need to do is go after dead beat fathers who don’t assume financial responsibility for their children.

You don’t like the welfare system?  Get up off your backside and do something about it.  But before you run off at the mouth about welfare in your state, find out what the rules and regulations!  While you’re at it; find out how much money your state gave back to the federal government because they didn’t want to spend local dollars to enroll children of working families with low income in a medical insurance program.  I’m ashamed to say Nevada returned millions of dollars.  Texas is another state that sent millions of dollars back because they didn’t enroll low income children into the federal medical insurance program.  Why?  Many, many women are forced to quit working because they need medical coverage for a sick child and can only get medical coverage by applying for welfare.

Availability of Affordable Child Care in UK/Germany

Parents and children in rural areas also face a disadvantage – 83% of rural parishes have no private nursery, 93% no public nursery and 92% no out-of-school childcare. The report says: “Only 10% of employees in the UK now work a standard 40-hour week, but flexible childcare services have not been developed to meet the needs of shift workers who still depend on multiple informal arrangements. With both parents in nearly 70% of couples working, there is a demand for an all-day service for three and four-year-olds, not just part-time nursery education places.

“Isolated working mothers are still very upset in the previous E.Germany, because months after the new SPD/Green Govt. were able to box through the re-introduction of govt. guarantees for the availability of pre-school child care and after school extended care for all who have a social indication of needing it… (after this had been the case for some 15+ years in the old E.Germany and had not been available since re-unification under the previous CDU/CSU Govt.. until its recent restitution.) a few of them have found themselves being put on 3 – 6 month waiting lists as local officials cling to high personnel .Child ratios and refuse to “overcrowd” in order to comply in the short term with the new govt. guarantees of a place – until more staff can be trained and premises found etc.”

Child Workers Face Scrutiny of their Past

Anyone applying for paid or volunteer work with children in NSW will have their lives scrutinized under new employment screening rules. About 100,000 people will be subject to the rules, which are believed to be a world first. They will apply not only to teachers and child-care workers, but also to school bus drivers, football coaches and school gardeners who have unsupervised contact with children. Under the two-tier system, no-one convicted of a sexual assault or child abuse crime carrying a penalty of 12 months or more will be allowed to work with children, whether paid or as a volunteer.

But those who have had only apprehended violence orders taken out against them, criminal charges dropped, or disciplinary procedures at work laid against them for physical, sexual or emotional abuse of children, will be assessed for childcare jobs. Their chances of a job will depend on the detail of their case and the position they apply for. Existing employees will not have to undergo these checks unless they change jobs.

Problems with Childcare Provider

If your childcare provider is a bad one, even if she tries to play to the camera, you will eventually catch something. You don`t need to say when you`ll be taping or even where the camera is, just let her know it’s an ongoing possibility for your own peace of mind. If she has nothing to hide she should have no objections and if she does, she probably would not be someone you`d be happy with anyway.

I`m fairly sure I`ve never been taped as a childcare provider since several years since I`ve cared for kids in their own home. I do occasional sitting in my own home and my part-time job is a social service childcare jobs facility that sometimes can`t afford to buy paper towels, much less a video camera, although I did ask about it one time. Take care yourself

For one thing, I think it’s illegal to tape someone without their knowledge. I know that if you tape a phone call, you have to inform them, and answering machines emit a periodic beep when they are recording during a phone call. However, it’s a different story if you let someone know ahead of time– either at the time of hire, or in advance of instituting the policy and give them the chance to turn the job down, or find new employment–that you are going to tape them periodically or at unscheduled times. In other words, by taking the job, or staying in the job, they are AGREEING to being taped at unscheduled times.

Childcare Providers Stung By ERB

Child care providers want the Government to change the Employment Relations Bill – and National has promised to fight to get them excluded from the Bill, Opposition Industrial Relations spokesperson Max Bradford said today. ”Providers of home based child care are calling on the Government to exclude them from the dependent contractor provisions in the Bill. “But so far the Government has turned a deaf ear. National will ensure the Government gets the message of concern. ”We are getting extensive feedback from our 40,000 plus mail out of a flyer on the Employment Relations Bill and it isn’t only small business who is worried about the impact on their livelihoods.

The New Zealand Childcare Association represents key providers of home-based child care around the country. ”The Association is worried about the viability of the service, for staff, for careers and for the families they provide services for if the Bill turns the careers into employees. “There are real fears that the chartered home based organizations won’t be able to meet the extra compliance costs attached to losing the contracting arrangement and services will have to close. ”And there’s concern about the impact of the personal liability provisions on parents who take an active role in Childcare job centers c. “Barbados and foster parents are two other providers of services that could be hit by the dependent contracting provision in the Bill.”

Parenting Program

Coordinate multiple program sites of the Child Abuse Prevention Parenting Program, a unit of Ambulatory Care Services at Harborview Medical Center. Participate as a teacher for the parenting program, prepare program documents and perform selected clerical functions. Provide necessary data input for the research aspect of the program. The coordinator will be expected to demonstrate an active interest in, and knowledge of, child abuse prevention, especially through parenting programs which maintain the standard of childcare jobs.

Must also demonstrate cultural sensitivity and an understanding of varying parenting styles and actively reach out to minority and low income families as an advocate. Maintain strict patient confidentiality. Work directly with parents to recruit, organize, and maintain an information system for families enrolling in an established parenting program. Assist in the development of pilot parenting programs for families of varying ethnicities, working with recognized community and clinical leaders. Work between, and occasionally be present at, three or more clinical sites in order to assist the parenting teachers at those sites.
